The fire broke out when a cargo of ammonium nitrate exploded in a warehouse owned by Global Logistica, near the port of Sao Francisco do Sul, early Wednesday morning. There were 10 tons of fertilizer stored in an area of 5 thousand square meters. Fire fighters are still at the scene attempting to put out the fire.
Due to the proportions of the fire and the toxic nature of the cargo, people in the area were removed to shelters. Operations in the port of Itapoa were suspended but will resume normally as of 19:00 hours Thursday. Operations in the port of Sao Francisco do Sul were also suspended, but returned to normal at 15:00 hours on Thursday after the port administration evaluated the situation.
