The presence of an intense mass of polar air causes a marked decline of the minimum temperatures in many cities of Rio Grande do Sul, where the thermometers already register values near 1 ° C in the border with Uruguay. In addition to the cold, a cold front causes isolated rain showers in much of the Southern Region. Rain showers are forecast also on cities in the south and east of São Paulo. But as it will be an irregular rain, the harvesting and quality of the grains should not be impaired. Only momentary work stoppages may occur. The big problem is that this increase in humidity could cause floral induction, that is, an anticipation in the flowering period, which is bad for this time of year. On the other hand, the return of the rain in the South will allow the elevation of soil moisture levels, guaranteeing good conditions for the development of wheat, which was suffering from water stress. The National Meteorological Institute (INMET) registered negative temperature in at least 40 cities. There has been frost formation in wide areas. Frosts reached sugarcane plantations in Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as wheat crops in western Paraná. However, it is still early to evaluate the real losses that this cold caused in these crops. In addition to wheat and sugar cane, pastures, vegetables and some fruit were also hampered by these record temperatures.
